Find the right door at Piazza del Duomo, reach the square from Santa Maria Novella or Florence Airport, and avoid arriving with luggage at a ticketed entrance. This guide covers trams, electric buses, walking, entrances, access and timing.
For most visitors, Santa Maria Novella is the useful transport hub. It is about a 5-minute walk from the Duomo, but each monument has its own entrance.
Use this from the main train station or after arriving by tram. The route reaches the historic centre without a further transfer.
T2 connects Florence Airport with the Santa Maria Novella area and continues toward Piazza San Marco. Use it before walking from SMN.
T1 also serves the Santa Maria Novella station area. It works for visitors arriving from stops along the T1 route.
C1, C2, C3 and C4 cross Florence’s city centre. They suit central stays when walking the whole way is less practical.
Most central hotels, Piazza della Signoria and Piazza San Marco are reached on foot. Crowded pedestrian streets can slow the last approach.
A taxi can help with heavy bags or limited mobility. The final drop-off may still be outside controlled streets near the square.
The complex is in Florence’s historic centre. Driving and parking are separate decisions, especially around restricted streets.
The Cathedral, Dome, Santa Reparata, Museum and Baptistery use separate access points around the square.
Visitors entering the Cathedral without a pass use the entrance at the Cathedral façade for free admission.
Brunelleschi’s Dome entrance is Porta della Mandorla on the north side of the Cathedral.
Santa Reparata is accessed from the Cathedral’s south side beside the Bell Tower entrance.
The Museum entrance is Piazza del Duomo no. 9. Baptistery entry is through the South Door.
Porta della Mandorla is on the Cathedral’s north side. A late Dome visitor may be refused if the booked time does not match, so do not spend time in the free Cathedral queue first.
Florence has tram connections to the Santa Maria Novella station area, not a tram stop at the Cathedral itself.
T2 links Florence Airport with the SMN area and continues to Piazza San Marco.
T1 serves the Santa Maria Novella station area, where the final approach is on foot.
Use the Autolinee Toscane journey planner for current tram information. Check service notices on the day, especially during engineering works or events.
Autolinee Toscane operates Florence public transport. The city-centre electric routes are C1, C2, C3 and C4.
Useful for city-centre travel. Confirm the current stop pattern before leaving.
Useful where walking is difficult. Check live service and your final walking approach.
Both cross the city centre. Use the live planner for the right route and stop.
These are route patterns, not guaranteed timings. Use live transport information on the day.

T2 is the clear public-transport link because it connects the airport with the Santa Maria Novella area.
Use the tram for the airport-to-centre part, then continue on foot to Piazza del Duomo.
Show the driver “Piazza del Duomo, 50122 Firenze”. Restricted streets can affect the final drop-off point.
Baggage, the airport walk, the tram or taxi, and the final approach come before the entrance. If you have luggage, deal with it before heading to a booked Dome slot.
Santa Maria Novella is in the city centre. The Duomo is about a 5-minute walk away.
Use a map for the final streets, especially when crowds block the view of the Cathedral.
The Cathedral façade, Porta della Mandorla, Porta del Campanile and Piazza del Duomo no. 9 serve different visits.
Crowded streets, heat and the size of the Cathedral can make the final approach slower than it looks.
This is the most useful walk for rail and tram arrivals. It reaches the square directly.
Both are practical on foot, but narrow streets and crowds can hide the correct side of the complex.
Getting near Piazza del Duomo is one task. Parking and reaching the correct entrance are separate tasks.
Show the written address, then walk to the entrance for your monument.
Confirm a public car park before leaving. Plan the walk from it to Piazza del Duomo.
Traffic controls and loading rules may stop a driver short of the map pin.
A nearby stop does not prove that every route, entrance or booked monument is accessible on the day.
The entrance for visitors with motor disabilities or impaired mobility is on the right side of the Cathedral.
The Cathedral, Museum and Baptistery are accessible to visitors with mobility difficulties. The Museum has elevators and restrooms.
The Dome has 463 steps, the Bell Tower has 414 steps, and neither has a lift. Santa Reparata has a staircase and no lift.
Check lift status at your origin and interchange. Wheelchairs are available at Cathedral and Museum entrances.
Security, luggage and dress rules can stop entry even when you are at the correct door.
Ticket holders must leave luggage beyond permitted dimensions at Piazza Duomo 38/r. Storage is open daily from 7:30am to 8:15pm.
Suitcases, backpacks, medium and large bags, umbrellas, tripods and sharp or dangerous objects must be deposited.
The Cathedral and Baptistery do not allow bare shoulders, legs uncovered above the knee or flip-flops. Eating and drinking inside is forbidden.
Save the ticket, exact entrance or meeting-point instruction, and any operator contact details before leaving. The Dome also requires the correct visitor name and ID at the entrance.
Reaching Piazza del Duomo is not the same as reaching your queue or meeting point.
Dome reservations are fixed. Visitors should not arrive more than 5 minutes before a booked time where requested, and late arrivals have only about a 5-minute tolerance.
Guided visits can use a meeting point that differs from a monument entrance. The voucher controls where you should stand.
Street names and door names matter more than a distant view of the Dome.
This is the free Cathedral admission entrance for visitors without a pass.
This north-side door confirms you are at the Dome entrance.
Porta del Campanile is beside the Bell Tower and serves Santa Reparata access.
This address confirms the entrance for the Opera del Duomo Museum.
The South Door is the current visitor entry for the Baptistery.
A correct route only helps if it ends at the correct entrance before your booked time.
Use the latest ticket or operator message, not an old calendar note.
Keep Piazza del Duomo and your specific entrance name available offline.
Confirm tram or bus service on the day before leaving your hotel.
Deposit required bags at Piazza Duomo 38/r before ticketed monument entry.
Keep a screenshot of the ticket and any meeting-point instructions.
You may need the ticket, map, entrance instructions and transport planner at once.
Use Piazza del Duomo, 50122 Firenze for the complex, then use the entrance named for your Cathedral, Dome, Museum or Baptistery visit.
Use T1 or T2 to the Santa Maria Novella area where useful, then walk to Piazza del Duomo.
Include the final walk, luggage storage, security and finding the correct side of the Cathedral.
